The two-second rule

Why speed is the product

The loop between "I want this" and "I see this" is the entire value. At two seconds it feels like moving something with your hands. At ten you open another tab and the session dies.

How quickly can you build my website?

A first version in minutes, from a paragraph you write about the business. Not a placeholder — real sections, your prices, your photographs, arranged around the one action that matters to you.

An afternoon to get it genuinely right. Most founders spend that first sitting adding what they forgot, moving things, cutting a section and putting it back. Forty changes is an ordinary evening here, and the free 300 sparks covers about that.

Web apps on the same clock. Order forms, bookings, enquiry flows, catalogues with a hosted checkout — described in words and changed in words. The word "app" does not add a month here.

And then it keeps up with you. The real cost of a website is the delay between reality changing and the site agreeing with it. A price change at six in the morning from your phone takes a sentence and a few seconds.

The number, including the part that is not flattering

We set ourselves a rule: under two seconds from pressing send to seeing the change. It is written down, it is measured, and it has not been met.

The first honest measurement was 11 to 14 seconds. Removing round trips took it to under four. On a mature app — dozens of changes deep — it went back up to between five and thirteen, because the builder was reading the app before editing it. Showing it the whole file up front removed that step and took a change on a mature app from about ten seconds to five, and made it cheaper at the same time.

Where it stands: roughly three to five seconds, and almost all of what is left is waiting on the model rather than on anything we can delete.

A slow loop is not a product you can make faster later. It is a different product.

What keeps it quick

  • Your app stays warm. There is no cold start on the ordinary path.
  • Changes are written straight to the running app, and the page updates in place rather than reloading.
  • The instructions the builder needs are cached, so they are not paid for again on every change.
  • Reading is avoided where showing works instead — a read costs a round trip and then charges for the same text again on the next one.

We would rather publish "three to five seconds" and keep working than round it down to the number on the poster.
