Your own domain
You should not have to learn what a nameserver is to have your own address.
Already own one? Connect it
You add a DNS record at whoever you bought the domain from. When the name genuinely resolves to us, it goes live — with a certificate issued automatically, so the padlock is there without you doing anything.
Ownership is proved by DNS and by nothing else, because creating that record is something only whoever controls the domain can do. An unverified entry does nothing at all: it gets no route and no certificate. Without that rule we could be talked into fetching a real certificate for a name imitating somebody else’s bank and serving content under it.
Our own names are refused outright, and so is anything under our preview and live addresses. Someone who could claim one could shadow another customer’s app.
Buying one through us
You do not need to deal with a registrar at all. We hold a registrar account, so tell us the name you want and we buy it, set it up and point it at your app. You are told what it costs before anything is bought, and the name is registered for you.
It is arranged with us rather than bought from a page on this site — a person does it, usually the same day. That is deliberate for now: registering a name spends real money at a registry the moment it happens and cannot be undone, and we would rather a human confirmed the spelling of the thing you will be printing on a board outside your shop.
Four rules sit behind it and they are written into the database as constraints rather than left as intentions: never register before payment is confirmed, never trust a browser over the payment provider’s own server, never register the same name twice, and re-check availability immediately before registering, because a name can be taken between asking and paying. That last case is the one thing our refund policy promises money back on — a registry charge is otherwise immediate and final.
